Practice Schedule (starts this Monday, March 16th)
Note: All practices will be at Jackson HS from 7:30-9:30pm.
In 2010, North City started with 1 team of 8th graders with the goal of getting each player better, competing against the top AAU teams in the area and have fun. That team consisted of players from the 2014 class including players from the Shorecrest, Arlington and Jackson – all teams that qualified for the State Tournament in 2014.
That 2010 team won the PNAAU Spring League (shown above) and North City was born. In 2011, we expanded two 2 teams, both at 15U and provided a quality training and competition option for players in Snohomish and King County. Our 15U Black team won the Pacific Northwest District Championship that year (shown below) and also had a 5th place finish at the Best in the West tournament in Yakima.
In 2012, we expanded to 4 teams and started to include younger grades along with our 2014 graduating class that continued to thrive. We added 2 teams at the 13U level and had our 2 teams at the 16U level. The goal was to still provide the best training in the area while helping each of our players improve their game. Below is a picture of the entire program at the Best in the West Tournament in Yakima.
Through 2010-2012, we set a precedent for offering some of the hardest and most rewarding training in the area. Sgt. Mike Lawson, one of our founders and lead trainers, built a innovative core strength training program for our teams that helped set them up for success (pictured below). Sgt. Lawson currently trains the Seattle Pacific University Men’s and Women’s basketball team and continues to lead our training program.
In 2013, North City doubled in size and had 8 teams spanning from 13U to 17U. The program continued to focus on the training program, competing in local and national tournaments and helping our players reach their goals. We were able to hire some of the best coaches in the area and helped train/guide nearly 90 players in the 2013 season. (pictured below).
Over the past few years, we were also able to have success on the court. During the 2013 season, we were able to win several AAU tournaments. A few of those are shown below.
In 2014, in an effort to maintain quality, the program stayed at the same size and had 8 teams competing and training locally. We were able to continue to provide quality training and have success on the court.
Thank you for your interest in North City Training and AAU. Please review our details below. If you have any questions please email email@example.com or call Andrew Grinaker (Founder) at 425-753-3035.
Note: If interested, we have provided 4 videos at the bottom of this post/page to showcase our trainers and their approach. Enjoy!
For the past 5 years, North City Training has provided players in King and Snohomish County with a quality spring/summer option. We are focused on improving each player through offensive skills training, an innovative strength/conditioning program and competing against the top AAU teams through leagues and tournaments. This past year we had 80+ local area players ranging from middle school to high school coming from as far north as Mount Vernon and as far south as Seattle.

REGISTRATION FOR TRYOUTS:
For the 2015 season, tryouts will be $10 per player. This registration cost will pay for the gym space and coaching fees involved in the 4 days of tryouts. We have teamed up with Team Sports Admin, a local company, to complete the registration and we have 100% confidence in their tool.
During this registration process, you will be asked to provide player and parent/guardian information. You will also be asked to sign a Liability form and Concussion form utilizing the online signature service, DocuSign.
Please help our organization by walking through this registration process to provide your contact details. The entire process should take 5-10 minutes and will allow us to automate the tryout/registration process
Tryouts will take place the week of March 9-13, the first full week after the conclusion of the WIAA State Championships. The link above will outline the specific dates and times for each grade/age level.
TEAMS The plan is to have at least 1 team for each grade level and the potential of multiple teams for grades that we have a strong turnout for.
In addition to the trainers listed above, each player will have a dedicated and experienced coach leading their team. All of our team coaches have extensive high school, middle school and/or AAU experience and are required to pass a rigid background check before being hired. Coaching assignments will be finalized 2-4 weeks before tryouts.
The 2015 spring session will run from March 9th through May 30th.
All practices will take place at Jackson HS in Mill Creek. Each team will practice either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and we will keep that routine for the remainder of the season to help families plan. Each team will have 2 practices each week, lasting 2 hours that will encompass a blend of individual training (40%), team offense/defense (40%) and core strength training (20%).
Our 11U, 12U and 13U teams will have a Summer session that will run from June through August. This Summer session is a separate cost from spring and details will be provided in April for the players that make the spring team.
Our 14U, 15U, 16U and 17U teams will take the month of June off to play with their high school teams. They will compete in July. This will be a separate cost from spring and details will be provide in April for the players that make the spring team.
TOURNAMENTS Based on the talent level of each team, we will build a tournament schedule that challenges each team and provides the most competitive environment possible. Each team will play in a minimum of 6 tournaments over the spring session. Some of the tournaments in consideration are below.
The Tulip Tournament (3/27-3/29)
The SYB Bunny Basket (4/3-4)
NW Premier Spring Showcase (4/10-4/12)
NW Premier Spring Slam (4/24-4/26)
The WTA Spring Fling (4/25-26)
The Best in West in Yakima (5/1-3)
CPC Invitational (5/15-17)
SYB Tournament of Champions (5/16-17)
Northwest Championships (5/23-25)
WTA Memorial Day Classic (5/23-25)
Note: The schedule for our 16U, 17U and HS Elite teams will consist of two Premier Showcase tournaments at Bellevue Community College in April, the Washington Premier League in May, and a tournament over the Memorial Day Weekend. Our HS Elite team will also travel to Oregon and Las Vegas in the month of July.
Our costs are all inclusive and includes all cost for practices/training sessions, apparel package, paid coaches/trainers, and tournaments.
The total cost of the spring session is $825.
$425 non-refundable due when teams are announced on March 14th. $200 due April 5th and $200 due May 5th.
FUNDRAISING TO HELP WITH COSTS: We understand that not everyone can afford the total cost of the spring session. For this reason, we have partnered with ESPN the Magazine and the AAU organization to help our families supplement the cost. The plan is straight forward. The goal is to sell 2-year subscriptions to ESPN the Magazine for $40. For each subscription sold, the player will receive $30 in return. For example, if they sell 10 subscriptions, they will get $300 back to go towards the cost of the season.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if your family is interested in fundraising.
SCHOLARSHIPS We recommend all families take part in fundraising but understand that some players may need scholarships. For the past 5 years, we have provided over $20,000 in scholarships and assign 1 full scholarship to each team at the start of the year. This scholarship can be split in half to accommodate two families. A scholarship application form is available to verify financial assistance and the details of the scholarship.
Please email email@example.com for the scholarship application form.
UNIFORMS/APPAREL All players competing in the Spring session will be receiving a sweatshirt, a short-sleeve t-shirt and a cinch bag. This is built in to the total spring cost listed above.
We will use the same uniforms as last year. If you are a new player or need a new uniform, they are $100 and will typically last 2 years. When you register for tryouts, you will be asked to provide your uniform sizes for both the jersey and the shorts.

We wanted to provide an update on two areas. One, we wanted to share some exciting news about the graduating class of 2014 and let you know about some of our former North City players who are now playing collegiate basketball. Two, we wanted to give a quick update on what is next for the North City organization and the upcoming sessions.
2014 Graduating Class
When we started North City in 2010, we started with 1 team of 8th graders. That group grew over the years and showcased some of the best talent in the WESCO conference. They recently graduated high school and some of those players are moving on to play collegiate basketball. Congrats and best of luck to this guys!
Conin Oishi (Shorecrest) – Willamette University
Brian Zehr (Jackson) – Bellevue College
Bradey Brummel (Arlington) – Butte College
Daniel Ghebremichael (Shorecrest) – Northwest College

Kaleb Bryson (Arlington) – Shoreline Community College
Our next session that we will be offering will start March 2015 and run through August 2015. We will not field teams during the winter season as we advocate for players to play on their high school or feeder select teams during this time.
We have already secured gym space at Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Washington that will allow us to accommodate up to 10 teams practicing this upcoming spring. We will again have coaches with previous AAU and/or high school experience leading the boys, along with top trainers in the area including Sgt. Mike Lawson and Chris Hyppa.
We will have teams in the following age groups. 12U, 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U
PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR UPDATES AS WE DEVELOP MORE DETAILS ON THE UPCOMING 2015 SPRING/SUMMER SESSION.
To help with individual player development, we are offering summer training sessions in a small group setting. This means 4-5 players will be assigned 1 dedicated coach and receive 2 (1 hr) training sessions per week. These sessions will focus on improving offensive skills including shooting ability, individual moves and also include defensive skills and strength training.
The small group summer training session will be June 30th through August 13th. The training will be on Mondays and Wednesdays at Alderwood Boys and Girls Club. We have 3 time slots available for training sessions.
The total cost of summer training is $200 with a total of 14 sessions offered.
Even if you have not participated in North City Training sessions before, you are welcome to sign up and attend.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
